We are a confidential adult basic education service for adults, organised by South Tipperary VEC and managed by Mary Roche, Adult Literacy Organiser.
Adult basic education in Ireland is based on a belief that effective learning builds on the wealth of life experience which adults bring to their work on literacy development. At the heart of this approach is the understanding, “A beginner reader is not a beginner thinker” (Frost and Hoy, 1985). Students bring to the process of learning a knowledge and understanding of themselves, their community and the wider society. They wish to engage with their Tutors as equals and to support each other as peers. This underpins the ethos and development of South Tipperary VEC Adult Learning Scheme.
We offer classes based on individual needs, for example:
Ø Helping school-age children with their homework
Ø Improving basic reading skills or building workplace reading skills
Ø Improving everyday writing skills or writing skills for the workplace
Ø Preparing for the Driver Theory Test
Ø Reading to children
Ø Understanding basic maths
Ø Using a computer
Ø Getting support for an adult education course
Tuition options available:
ü One to one – 1 hour per week
ü Small groups – 2 to 6 hours per week
ü Part-time accredited courses at levels 1, 2 and 3
The Adult Learning Scheme headquarters is based in Clonmel, on Dillon Street. We have five other permanent centres, located in Tipperary Town, Cahir, Cashel, Killenaule and Carrick-on-Suir. Tuition is available mornings, afternoons and evenings.
